Obviously, some local high school XC runners were having some fun! "Alan Webb" was a few rows down in the placing.

Too funny!
PS. Interestingly, the course record in my hometown 5k is 13:56 (yep, 13)!, while the 10k record is 29:xx! (Joe Lemay holds the 10k record - he's featured in Adv. Mar. by Pfitz.)

I couldn't help but post this. I finished Dane's book this morning and just thought I would give it a plug. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. One of the reviewers said something to the effect that the story is told "lovingly." I thought that was an apt description.

Dane sets up the year (2006) pretty quickly in the beginning of the book, telling the reader how he was first introduced to running, taking us through other sports with which he had brushes. We read of his early experiences with the marathon distance and discover that at one time (a long time ago) he was actually a human runner.

He then launches into 52 consecutive race reports. It was fun to follow along as he made his way through the year. He also makes several interesting observations about the logistics and potential obstacles that could have stopped his progress (for example, on #50, the weekend before Christmas, he had two races to choose from. He chose Jacksonville. Good thing, because the alternative race in Washington state ended up being cancelled due to a winter storm.)

And, of course, there were the two marathons that we ran in common that year - Deadwood Mickelson (Dane, it's spelled with a "k" not an "h" :p) and New Mexico. There were also those marathons that he ran that year that I've run in other years. And then, there were descriptions of marathons that I now am motivated to run given his description of and experience with them.

It's been fun sharing the past few mornings with your book, Dane. It reminds us that there we can be capable of extraordinary things if we put our minds to it. Thanks. I heartily recommend the experience to others here.

In our back yard we have a small oval pond and in the center of it is a spherical ceramic fountain through which water bubbles out the top, covering the ball and flowing into the pond. The water attracts birds, as one might guess, and this morning in the trees and around the yard was the largest flock of robins I've ever seen--hundreds, maybe a thousand birds. The lip of the pond is about 4 inches above the water level, and the ball is very slippery due to the running water and its smoothness, so there is no place for a small bird to stand to reach and drink the water (they move on to our nearby birdbath generally). However, for the first time since the fountain was installed, a bird managed to land on the very top of the ball, somehow hold on, and drink from the bubbling water. Taking counsel from an unknown Chinese sage, I did not tell him this was impossible while he was doing it. Quite a sight to see. Perhaps the message was, don't fear to try to do the impossible, as it might just be possible if you try hard enough and don't give up despite repeated failed attempts. And who knows--maybe you are that 1000th robin.

QOTD: See anything unusual recently on your runs or in general. Learn anything from it?

and today's run?

So with a nagging calf injury, I started to look into compression socks/ sleeves. On a past thread the dude doing a cartwheel at the marathon finishline was wearing them. Not that I plan to pull off such a trick but I do wonder if there is any support (pun intended) from our forum runners.

And does anyone have a preference? Thinking about giving the Zensah sleeves a try:
We have Dane on this Forum, who ran 52(?) in a year, and Barkeep, who ran one a month for a year. Anyone else run a bunch?
So QOTD--What's the most marathons you've done in a year? A lifetime (so far)? Do you have any interest in doing a really big number, say over 100?
Any 50 staters here?

I'm looking for help compiling a list of variables that can affect a 26.2 mile run. I'm sure there's enough experience around here that we could drill down into very specific race "gotchas". Everything from foot care to solar flares is fair game. Personal stories and best practices are of course welcome.

Can you tell the taper madness is setting in? :p

General Update on my brother

Thanks to everyone for their support and kind words. This is an update on my brother who collapsed at the end of the San Antonio 1/2 marathon.

My brother was moved out of the ICU yesterday but remains in the hospital. He will probably be released tomorrow. His kidneys have normalized, but his liver enzymes are still high and they are waiting for them to come down before he is released. It turns out that when he was admitted, he was in acute renal failure. I'm glad I didn't know that information until afterwards when things had stabalized.

I got to talk with him on the phone and he says he is feeling fine and is able to get up and walk around and eat. He told me he is more embarassed than anything else. I'm feeling very relieved now that I actually got to talk to him and he sounds like his old self.

He doesn't remember anything from the last mile of the race, which is scary. He didn't remember feeling lightheaded, sick, or even all that tired. Apparently there is video from the race and you can see him fall right before the finish and other runners helped him across the finish line, where paramedics took over. I haven't looked at the video, and I don't think I will. I can't have that image stuck in my head of my brother.

Again, thank you all for your support. These things are certainly a wake up call. Be careful out there and always listen to your body!!

Congratulations to everyone for posting miles before noon on Tuesday -- 1st time I've not sent reminders out! So I'll start a weekly instead. We're 100% posted with 690 miles in 3rd place; our closest rival for the year, T9 is about 100 miles back with 3 posters to come. We'll see -- I'll update later.

Some of us are coming off fall marathons, some are still preparing for December or January ones, or going into base building for next year, or starting prep for Boston, or... QOTW -- what are your plans for your next races , through the winter.

Also, tell us how your week went last week and how it's shaping up this week.
